About Cancer Council Queensland
Cancer Council Queensland (CCQ) is the state’s leading not-for-profit research and support service organisation for all Queenslanders and all cancers with over 60 years of experience in conducting high quality research.

CCQ is a public company limited by guarantee being incorporated in 1969 under the Corporations Act and registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). The directors of Cancer Council Queensland are its members.

CCQ is a not-for-profit entity, working in close alignment with a broad network of education, health, philanthropic, industry and community partners. These partnerships are pivotal to the success of CCQ’s 2023-2027 Strategic Plan, titled Navigating Cancer Together, launched in late 2022.

The strategy identifies three priorities which focus on Research, Prevention and Support. These key priorities will deliver evidence-based programs which will reduce cancer risk and improve the experience and quality of life for people living with cancer.

The position
CCQ is governed by a Board of seven non-executive directors, including the non-executive chair. The role of the Board is to provide strategic oversight and direction for CCQ’s management and activities and to ensure that organisational activities are aligned with CCQ’s mission.

The Board is seeking to appoint an independent, non-executive director to ensure that the Board has the requisite collective skill set as set out in its Board composition matrix.

The non-executive director will provide strategic guidance with a particular expertise in providing knowledge and experience at a senior leadership level in the health sector, client operations and service delivery to support CCQ’s mission and outcomes.

Key selection criteria
The successful candidate must have a real interest in CCQ’s work and be able to meet the following criteria:

  • Qualifications in health and a minimum of 15 years’ experience in the delivery of oncology, cancer care or allied health care related services.

Ideally the person has worked at a senior executive level in significant health and community services organisations as a medical doctor, nurse, public health, or allied health professional involved in health delivery and support in the community.

  • Have the demonstrable career experience to be able to play an active role in strategic planning including critically assessing strategic opportunities and threats for CCQ, particularly in the areas relevant to the provision of support services to cancer survivors.
  • Experience at Board level including a sound working knowledge of organisational and corporate governance systems and frameworks, and an ability to apply that support to a not-for-profit organisation.

In addition, the director should have an appreciation of the impact of a cancer diagnosis on the individual, their family and the community considering clinical, emotional, and practical needs of the community.

The director should be a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors or Governance Institute or be prepared to undertake the relevant course within the first 12 months of their term.

CCQ are seeking a candidate based in Queensland, preferably from regional Queensland.
