The Group, established in 1948, is family-owned and employs more than 500 people in Australia, mainly in Queensland. The group’s annual turnover is in excess of $300 million.

The board

Each of the Neumann companies within the group are independent and have established their own boards in accordance with their respective constitutions. This opportunity would see the Meeting Chair providing board support to a number of the Neumann Group of companies, which include:

  • Action Sands Pty Ltd as Trustee for B&N Unit Trust

  • Neumann Associates Pty Ltd

  • Currumbin Minerals Pty Ltd

  • Neumann Contractors Pty Ltd

  • Neumann Steel Pty Ltd

  • Marbordo Pty Ltd

  • Tebuk Pty Ltd as Trustee for Tebuk Trust.

The position

The companies listed above are seeking to appoint an independent Meeting Chair. The Meeting Chair will be charged with effectively facilitating the board meetings of the Neumann Group, ensuring a constructive and trusting dynamic. 
The Meeting Chair has no voting rights on and of the Neumann boards or any of its companies, and nor does the Meeting Chair have any individual authority to be involved in the day-to-day management of the Neumann group of companies unless the board has specifically delegated that task. 
The board is seeking candidates who are passionate about the industries in which the Neumann group of companies operate and meets the selection criteria outlined below.


The Meeting Chair is responsible for ensuring that the board fulfils its role as per its charter as well as facilitating effective board meetings. In particular, the Meeting Chair will be expected to:

  • Utilise the agenda provided, lead the board meetings and facilitate constructive contributions by all directors

  • efficiently run, manage and minute the board meetings in a way that encourages clear decisions, ensuring the board remains focused on its key tasks and responsibilities

  • develop a constructive relationship with the CEO, Company Secretary and executive team so as to facilitate communication between the board and management, and 

  • establish an effective working relationship with the company’s shareholders.

The Meeting Chair is expected to attend all board meetings at the Currumbin head office. 
In this regard, each of the above listed boards (listed in Section 2) meets for approximately 1-3 hours, 4 times per year. Equating to approximately 20 calendar days per year. 
Each Neumann board meeting is held at Currumbin on the Gold Coast. 
The Meeting Chair is remunerated by way of a market competitive fee payable for each meeting chaired. This meeting fee includes initial Company’s inductions, time to prepare for the board meetings, attending board meetings, post board meeting finalisation of minutes, extraordinary meetings, annual shareholders meeting and ad hoc discussions between meetings.  
The appointment of the Meeting Chair is to be for two years. The board would ideally like to have the Meeting Chair in place by September 2022.

Key selection criteria
The successful candidate must be able to meet the following criteria.

  1. Demonstrated skills and experience at board level in a Meeting Chair role including an ability to assess board culture and create a meeting space that is inclusive and effective.

  2. Sound working knowledge of corporate governance systems and frameworks, and an ability to apply that support to a large family business, at board level. Candidates who are Graduates of the Australian Institute of Company Directors will be highly regarded. 

  3. An ability to work effectively within a family business context including liaising with, and gaining the trust and respect of shareholders.

It would also be advantageous for candidates to have had some background and experience in the building, minerals and/or quarry industries.

The Neumann Companies are seeking a candidate preferably based in South East Queensland or Northern New South Wales.
